Sophie Nyweide, remembered for her roles in films such as Mammoth and An Invisible Sign, has died at the age of 24.
Her mother confirmed to TMZ that the exact cause of death remains unknown, with autopsy results still pending.
In a heartfelt online tribute, Sophie was remembered as a “bright, athletic, and thoughtful” young woman who touched the lives of many. She passed away on April 14, as noted in the obituary.
The tribute also acknowledged her personal battles, stating that she struggled with lingering pain from past experiences. “She often chose to face things alone, turning away from help that might have saved her,” the message shared. “Despite her strength, the burden she carried proved overwhelming.”
Born in Burlington, Vermont, Sophie split her time growing up between her home state and New York. Her love for acting appeared early in life, with family members recalling her determination to perform—even before learning that her mother, Shelly Gibson, had once worked in the same field.
Nyweide’s film career began in 2006 with the movie Bella. She later played the daughter of Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal in Mammoth (2009), and shared the screen with Jessica Alba in An Invisible Sign (2010). She also appeared in Noah (2014), and made her final on-screen appearance as herself in ABC’s What Would You Do?
Her mother, Shelly Gibson, is also known for her roles in All My Children, Dust to Malibu, and St. Elsewhere.
“Sophie left this world far too soon,” the family wrote. “May her journey inspire greater awareness, compassion, and protection for all children. We must do better.”
In memory of Sophie, her family asks that donations be made to RAINN, a nonprofit organization supporting survivors of sexual assault, instead of sending flowers.
