Jeff Sperbeck, a prominent sports agent best known for representing NFL Hall of Famer John Elway, has died at the age of 62, officials announced on Wednesday.
Sperbeck passed away at 1:10 a.m., days after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a serious accident over the weekend.
The incident occurred on the night of April 26 as Sperbeck was riding on the rear of a golf cart driven by Elway. The group — including their wives and Elway’s son — was heading back from a post-Stagecoach festival gathering when Sperbeck fell from the cart and hit his head on the pavement.
He was rushed to a nearby medical center, where doctors placed him on life support. Despite efforts to save him, his condition did not improve, and preparations were made for organ donation.
Law enforcement officers initially did not respond to the scene due to being assigned to the large music event nearby. However, an official investigation into the incident is now underway.
Elway personally called 911 in an urgent attempt to get assistance for his friend.
Their relationship went far beyond that of client and agent — it began in the early 1990s and eventually evolved into a deep friendship and business partnership, including a shared venture in the wine industry.
