Joe Biden has publicly thanked individuals around the world for their messages of encouragement following the disclosure of his cancer diagnosis. Among the many gestures of support, a personal letter from King Charles III stood out.
“Cancer affects nearly every family,” Biden posted on social media Monday. “Jill and I have come to understand that resilience often grows from life’s most painful moments. We’re deeply grateful for your compassion and encouragement.”
Biden’s office confirmed on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has already spread to his bones. The illness, with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), is considered high-risk due to its potential for rapid spread. However, doctors noted that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, making it more manageable with treatment.
The announcement has reignited questions surrounding Biden’s physical condition during his presidency. The diagnosis followed Biden’s complaints of urinary issues, which led medical professionals to detect a small nodule on his prostate, ultimately revealing the cancer.
Messages of support have poured in from across the political divide. President Donald Trump, former President Barack Obama, and Vice President Kamala Harris have all offered their well-wishes. According to Buckingham Palace, King Charles—who is also receiving treatment for cancer—sent a private note of encouragement to Biden.
Biden had previously shared his concern for the King’s health, saying, “I just learned about his diagnosis. I hope to speak with him soon, God willing.”
Despite the support, Biden’s diagnosis has fueled fresh criticism about whether he was physically capable during his time in office. Vice President JD Vance extended his support for Biden’s recovery but questioned the transparency of his health status while in office.
“We have a responsibility to be honest with the American people,” Vance stated on Monday. “Whether it was his medical team or senior staff, there may have been a failure to fully inform the public. This isn’t just about Biden—it’s about those who enabled this situation.”
Vance also stressed that leadership requires robust health and clear judgment: “This isn’t a symbolic job. If someone’s health prevents them from fulfilling their duties, they should not be in that position.”
The timing of Biden’s diagnosis also coincides with media attention surrounding an upcoming book titled Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again. Scheduled for release on Tuesday, the book claims that Biden’s aides hid signs of his deteriorating health. Reports include Biden allegedly failing to recognize actor George Clooney at a political event and private conversations about possibly using a wheelchair for appearances.
Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential campaign nearly a year ago, citing concerns about his age and health as mounting factors.
