Mary Lou Retton, Olympic Gymnast, Faces DUI Charge in West Virginia

From Olympic Glory to Legal Trouble: Mary Lou Retton Arrested for Suspected DUI in West Virginia

Former Olympic champion Mary Lou Retton was taken into custody in West Virginia earlier this month for allegedly driving under the influence. The arrest was noted in documents filed with the Marion County Magistrate Court.

Retton, 57, was reportedly arrested on May 17, although authorities have not released further information about the circumstances that led to the incident. Efforts to obtain comments from the Fairmont Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office have not yet been successful.

According to online records, Retton was released after posting a bond of $1,500. NBC News stated that attempts to reach her representatives for a statement had not received a response.

Retton rose to fame during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles when she captured the individual all-around gold medal in gymnastics. Her victory over Romanian gymnast Ecaterina Szabo made her the first American woman to win that title, cementing her status as a national sports icon. She also became the first female athlete to be featured on the cover of a Wheaties cereal box.
