India and Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire, But Tensions Flare in Kashmir

Despite a diplomatic breakthrough leading to a ceasefire agreement, fresh explosions in Kashmir reignite fears of renewed conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

ISLAMABAD/NEW DELHI, May 10 — India and Pakistan, both equipped with nuclear weapons, reached a ceasefire agreement on Saturday after diplomatic efforts led by the United States. However, just a few hours later, explosions were reported in Srinagar and Jammu, major cities in Indian-controlled Kashmir, casting immediate doubt on the ceasefire’s durability.

According to local authorities, residents, and eyewitnesses, loud detonations and bright flashes lit up the night skies over Jammu, resembling the previous evening’s hostilities.

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri accused Pakistan of violating the newly agreed-upon truce. “We call on Pakistan to seriously address these breaches and take appropriate measures to uphold the agreement,” he said during a press briefing.

In contrast, Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told Geo News there had been no ceasefire violations “so far.” Pakistan’s military has not issued any formal response.

This recent flare-up represents the most intense military confrontation between the two nations in nearly three decades, heightening fears of a broader conflict in one of the world’s most volatile regions. At one point, Pakistan’s military indicated that its nuclear oversight body might convene, though this was later refuted by the country’s defense minister.

The renewed violence has resulted in the deaths of at least 66 civilians amid cross-border strikes targeting each side’s military infrastructure.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced the ceasefire on X, stating, “Both nations have agreed to an immediate ceasefire. Pakistan continues to pursue peace and security in the region without compromising its national sovereignty and territorial rights.”
